Chapter one

Our mission

Our mission is to promote hope and healing by collecting new and gently used books and literacy items.

We focus on education and mental health, aiming to reach vulnerable communities with limited access to these essential resources.

By providing books, educational materials, and inspiring stories, we strive not only to alleviate immediate hardships but to empower individuals and families. Our goal is to ignite a passion for learning and imagination in children, while also supporting families as they rebuild their lives.

Chapter three

Twenty expecting veterans, and a table full of books.

A table draped in black cloth, covered with children's picture books, board books, and magazines, beside an Appalachian Books & Blessings sign.
Knoxville, Tennessee

We had the incredible pleasure of meeting 20 expecting veterans and their families at the Expecting Veterans Baby Shower in Knoxville. It was a beautiful day filled with resources, support, and organizations ready to bless these families. From diapers, strollers, outfits, and playpens to, of course, books, there was something for everyone.

Each family left with their own personalized gift basket, and we were honored to be a small part of making their day a little brighter.

A book may seem like a simple gift, but sometimes it becomes the beginning of a conversation, a connection, a new hobby, or a cherished memory.

A garden, replanted

We met a family who had recently moved here from Hawaii and shared their love of gardening with us. They were so excited to discover our gardening magazines.

A shelf just for dads

We also met a new dad with a passion for grilling, and we were thrilled to have a section of books just for dads, giving him something to enjoy as he begins this new chapter of fatherhood.

A huge thank you to Allison and Ashley for inviting Appalachian Books & Blessings to be part of such a special event. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to serve these veterans and their families.

A special thank-you

Tammy VanderMolen

Originally from Elizabethton, Tennessee and now living in Michigan, Tammy reached out to us in the early days after Hurricane Helene. After many years in business, her local bookstore had decided to close so its owners could retire.

With the help of several volunteers and transporters, we were fortunate to receive 8 pallets of books to distribute to counties far and wide. So far, those books have reached 9 different counties, and we are continuing Tammy’s mission to give books to children in underserved communities.

Thank you, Tammy, for your continued support, kindness and big heart for literacy.
